There are only seven universities in Iceland, and it so happens that three of them - including the two largest - held their graduation events on the same day.

There are around 150 universities in the UK. If they all held their graduation events on the same day, that day would see around 650,000 degrees conferred. (slightly dated source, I'm only counting "Postgraduate research", "Masters taught", and "First degree" as being degrees within the meaning of the act).

That's actually fairly close to 1% of the population as well, so the figure may be fairly similar throughout the developed world excluding Germany. (For cultural reasons, going to university has never been as popular a choice in Germany as in most other developed nations.)

In case you need a bit of variation on shark attack stories:
Boy attacked by pike
(in Swedish, but there are photos)

Short version: don't dangle your legs in the water when sitting on a bathing platform in a Swedish lake.

Man saves young owl from being drowned by aggressive seagulls in harbour
(Sorry can't link directly to the photo I wanted, so you'll have to put up with the full news article in Danish. At least there isn't a paywall.)

Makes me wish I still lived in London. I would go there just for the moral support. The Brick Lane one must have opened after I left, or at least after I stopped working, because I would hardly have forgotten seeing it, and I have no memory of passing it.
