I'd have thought the most efficient way would be to take the full recording, first edit it down to the 45-minute version, and then edit the 45-minute version down to the half-hour version. Isn't that what they actually do?

Surely, doing this;

would automatically create this;

wouldn't it?

So, has there actually been an announcement about the Occupations and Offices XL version? Couldn't find anything on the site, or Facebook, or Twitter, or Googling about.

@crissdee: Of course it would, but some people in the thread were commenting as though the production team first made a 30-minute version, and then put together a 45-minute version using material that had been edited out of the 30-minute version. Which wouldn't make an awful lot of sense to me.

Presumably the reason why the 30-minute version is aired before the 45-minute version is that viewers are more likely to tune in for the repeat if it contains material that wasn't broadcast the first time. It doesn't follow that the 30-minute version is actually made before the 45-minute version.

I realise it's not that simple, but it would seem to be a sound framework to work around.

As I understand it, that is pretty much how it's done.

Some of the stuff that is only in XL is left out of the short version more because it's a bit long than because it's not in the "best 30 minutes". When you have only 28 minutes available you don't really want two discussions that go on for five minutes apiece, but it's less of an issue when you have the extra fifteen minutes to play with.

Thank you!
I hoped it was just delayed. I know it has happened before. (Grumble, grumble.)

Okay, the series has ended (except for the compilation bits). now Where's my XL version of Occupations and Offices?

There's a 45 minute episode due on Saturday 10th March according to Digiguide, although it didn't give any details as to which episode it will be. Hopefully the BBC won't do their occasional trick of putting in one from a previous series.

I think that DigiGuide is listing the XL version of the episode as going out on 10th March at 22.30.

Okay, looks like it aired as scheduled. Don't let it happen again, BBC. *puts torch and pitchfork back in the rioting cupboard*
