From the QI site:

Peter Mark Roget (17791869) invented the thesaurus and the slide rule.

Not even close. The invention of the slide rule is generally credited to William Oughtred in 1622. Wikipedia says that Roget invented the "log-log" slide rule, which had special scales that allowed the calculation of exponentials and roots. That was in 1815.

Whether Roget invented the "thesaurus", I'm not sure. He certainly came up with the idea of classifying words according to their meaning, and called it "Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition"; but the word "thesaurus" had been around for centuries before then. I suppose he was the first person to come up with the idea of a "thesaurus" as we generally understand it now.
