Hey Paul. I'm new too, though I haven't made a thread here... I've been posting here (some might say too much) for a week now and I've found everyone very friendly and welcoming. I hope you do too.

Hi Paul and welcome :-)

You can swap kidney stories with crissdee of these forums, who managed to steal one from a friend a couple of years ago (well he said she'd donated it but...)

And here I am!!! Complete with donated kidney!!! How are you coping with dialysis? And indeed, what kind of dialysis are you on? I went for home-based PD in the end, but didn't have the room for a months supply of the stuff so I had to have fortnightly deliveries. Luckily I only had to have it for 18 months, as I had a liviing donor ready and waiting.

I also dabble in writing, currently a run of "Victorian" horror/adventure/sci-fi tales, but previously a 128,000 word novel about men with big guns blowing crap up and killing bad guys.

That was my original plan, but then I picked up the bacteria that rotted my foot bones and the specialists advice to me was that I'd probably get the bacteria in the pipe too, and in his words "and then you'd die". So I decided perhaps using a method that did not result in replacing my bed with a nice pine box was the best option, and changed to hemodialysis. However all this had to be delayed because of a couple of operations to save my foot, so I started off with what is probably called chemical dialysis. Four times a day for several weeks they fed a big bag of liquid Florisimide (probably s.ic.) into me though a drip, and had me pissing gallons a day.

Not well. I'm keeping to the food diet OK, but I drink too much liquid, I'm supposed to stick to a maximum of 60cl (about one pint of liquid) a day. Not managing it. Most dialysis sessions they have to take the maximum possible, plus I occasionally have to have extra sessions.

On top of this my fistula isn't working properly, and they are talking about experimental surgery to fix it, which will mean there is a 50% chance I'll end up being one of the first people to have this surgery (won't know if I do or not until way after the operation - it is a double blind trial).

Still, on the bright side: During Dialysis I'm catching up on "No Such Thing As A Fish" back episodes.

My sister offered, but then she got cancer. Cancer is a nightmare for anyone, but worse for my sister as it is the same type of cancer that killed our mother, at about the age my sister is now. Sometimes I wish I still believed in God, so that I have someone to blame.

I've done some sci-fi and detective, but could not sell it so occasionally publish online for the fun of it. The only way I ever made money out of these two was a sci-fi detective story with fetish overtones (a murder mystery based on a planet called "Planet Dominatrix") that still sells the occasional copy in eBook form. Shame because non-fetish detective fiction (of the Philip Marlowe school) and science fiction (of the 50s to 70s style) are my favourite genres.

Wowza, sounds like you and your family have been through the mill something fierce. Here's wishing you and your sister your health back sooner rather than later. I just read your citrus cooking experiment there and it sounds fucking delish!

I hear that, I was only limited to 1 litre a day, but coming off of 1 litre at a sitting was impossible. The hardest thing was limiting my salt intake. Working on the road, I would usually get lunch from a supermarket, but just everything has salt in it. Mars Bars, Coca Cola, you name it, it has salt in it. I lived for a couple of weeks on fruit salad and milk for lunch, just to get my salt level down.

My brother offered, but he was on too much blood pressure medication. He has also just survived bowel cancer, so probably just as well. The friend who made me go for a check up volunteered immediately, but it took eighteen months to go through the procedure. Good luck with findng a donor. I would pray for you, but it would be the height of hypocrisy for me to ask anything of the invisible friend in the sky.

Some were, but the last (chicken in lemon and lime rice) was only just edible.

I already have high blood pressure, so had been limiting my salt intake for years. Miss it on chips though, and miss crisps too.

My favourite prayer is "Oh God, if there is a God, please save my soul, if I have a soul."

I love that. Did you come up with that, or just hear it somewhere?
