A few episodes ago we heard about VW selling more sausages than cars. Led me to this similar fact:

I know Nokia used to be much more diverse in its products (toilet paper is the famous thing it used to make) but does anyone know of any other radical brand shifts?

Not so much a shift, but a major advance. Nintendo started off selling playing cards.

Nintendo also spent a while doing taxicabs, pre-cooked rice products, and "love hotels"* before alighting on video games as the way forward for the company.


* The sort of cheap hotel which rents rooms by the hour, and isn't really expecting anyone to go to sleep.

They also branched out into making noodle soup, ballpoint pens, LEGO-like blocks, baby swings and even a photocopier. All failed.
