Did you know who declared war on Japan immediately after Pearl Harbor?

It wasn't the United States.

The answer is Canada.

On December 7th 1941 Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, sinking or damaging 18 ships, destroying 188 aircraft and killing 2403 men.

Later that evening the Canadian PM, Mackenzie King announced the Canadian Cabinet's decision to go to war on Japan following this attack. King George VI approved this decision in a proclamation on December 8th.

That day US President Franklin D Roosevelt addressed a joint session of the 77th US Congress, declaring December 7th 'a day that will live in infamy' and declaring war on the Japanese Empire amid public outrage over the deaths of so many men. He also broke off diplomatic relations following the late delivery of a note form the Japanese government.

So US declared war the day afterthe Pearl Harbor attack, several hours after Canada had done so.

The actual declaration was made on the 8th and was made retrospectively. Not quite the same day...

The formal royal proclamation/confirmation was made on December 8th and, indeed, was made retrospectively. However, the actual governmental decision to declare war was made the evening earlier.

Yes. Exactly. Canada declared war on the 8th, the day after Pearl Harbour. Not the 7th.
