The ancient Romans used the phallus as a good luck, charm, and so ended up with jaunty itens such as these:

If the elves do ejaculate a phallic episode, may I recommend Richard Herring as a guest.

He's written two tour shows and a book, all three entitled Talking Cock.

Quote:
It's an object of shame and pride; it can inspire laughter and fear; it's a symbol of power, yet it's incredibly fragile and weak; it can be a pound of flesh or an ounce of winkles, it can be used to express both love and hate; it creates life, it can condemn us to death... and it can do wees as well.

How can one tiny flap of sponge and sinew be all these things?

The first tour was written as "Man's answer to The Vagina Monologues". The book, Talking Cock: A Celebration of Man and his Manhood, was published towards the end of the tour. The show itself was revisited 10 years later as Talking Cock: The Second Coming.

If it's about cock and Rich doesn't know it, it's probably not worth knowing.

If anyone gives a sh... you-know-what... the podcast for ...The Second Coming is still online.

That's a good reminder Bondee - I'm sure the elves read this thread but I'll incorporate that somewhere (with due acknowledgment to yourself) in the research threads.

Apparently, thanks to a rather... unorthodox priest, the walls of Bhutan are adorned with big phalluses to ward off evil.

Here are a few examples:

The guy that inspired this was a 15th-century Buddhist monk called Drukpa Kunley who is credited with bringing Buddhism to Bhutan.

He's also known as, among other things, "The Saint of 5000 Women" because of his raging sex life.

His temples, coincidentally, are also dedicated to fertility where a popular tradition for pilgrims is to be struck on the head with a wooden phallus (quite a big one too; 10 inches apparently!).

Finally,he called his phallus the "Thunderbolt of Flaming Wisdom" because of it's ability to enlighten others (mostly women).

Sorry, what is "penii"? The plural of "penius"? Don't know that word, sorry.

Of course it isn't. "Penis" is third declension, so the Latin plural is "penes". It's only second declension nouns in "-us" that have a plural in "-i" (e.g. "radius/radii"). Easy to check.

Yes it is, and the only sensible plural in English.

Penii is a jocular form, but there are a handful of citations for its use in "serious" writing.

The OED wants the plural of penis to be penes, with penises (my preference, just as it's Guy's) its second choice. Rather worryingly though, it also sanctions peni - but not penii.
