Afternoon everybody

Douglas here

This is my first time on the QI forum. I've been a massive fan of the show since it first started and been a lover of trivia all my life especially where history is concerned.

I have three history degrees and am currently jobseeking. I enjoy philately, history, reading, walking, cinema and genealogy as hobbies.

So let's start as I mean to carry on.

Every major Russian leader since 1881 has been alternately bald and hairy.

Hi Douglas and welcome.

I do like that factoid :-)

But isn't the definition of a factoid something that purports to be true but isn't?

Hi Douglas!

I've always understood "factoid" to mean a small/trivial fact, one of no apparent significance, the equivalent (and indeed main constituent) of "small talk".

Actually, according to Merriam Webster it is both:

Definition of factoid

1: an invented fact believed to be true because it appears in print
2: a briefly stated and usually trivial fact

All quite interesting!

And so is this.

Leo Fender, inventor of the famed Fender Telecaster, never learned how to play the guitar and had to use musicians to test them out.

Random Factoids have their own thread which begins here. It's more than 200 pages long, so it might take you a while to work your way through it.

The Leo Fender fact has already appeared on said thread, way back in post 275077.

A 'mushfaker' is another term for a repairer of umbrellas.

Surely this can't be common wisdom!

King Erik XIII of Sweden became a pirate after losing his throne.
