First shot of World War I

An episode from 2015 on military matters has just been re-shown on ABC TV in Australia, in which it was stated that the first shot was fired in Togoland in Africa, then a German colony, four days after the declaration of war on 4th August 1914. I believe that this isn't correct, the first shot having been fired from a land fortification across the bows of a German freighter attempting to escape from Port Phillip Bay, the approach to the port of Melbourne in Australia, within a matter of hours after the declaration.

I think we have to concede that point, which has been raised with us a couple of times before.

A discussion which begins at post 717252 goes into this matter in some detail. The fellow called Sadurian Mike who appears in that discussion is a military historian.
