"Half of Napoleon’s army at the battle of Eylau – 30,000 men – were burglars."

Does this mean that Napoleon had a total of 30,000 men or does it mean that 30,000 of his soldiers were burglars?

Sometimes I am very literal and things like this confuse me somewhat. Sorry.

I would take that as 15,000 being burglars.

D'you see what I mean?

If it was spoken then the emfarssis, emfersiss, er emphasis in the speech would make it clear, but when written it is not always clear which way to hear it in ones head.

I think Pete's right - it could be read either way.
