... you could say that although there is no real scientific basis, because we have some notion of what a "fish" is, it affects our behaviour, and we must admit that at least the idea of a fish exists.

iirc, the point being made is that there is no single, defining characteristic that links cod, sturgeon, pirahnas etc into one group, other than convention.

I guess it should really be named "There is no such thing as just a fish". There is a group of animals we call fish. We can call them fish. Scientifically it is a useless term as they all have a group, family, species etc. We don't need the word fish (in science).
