Got your attention.
As said on QI "they simply don't know why we sleep" (simply put - more like!)
In as much as we can, really, only know aspects there is research that delineates a very significant aspect of the many reasons for sleep. Not a total answer but very significant.

http://www.ted.com/talks/jeff_iliff_one_more_reason_to_get_a_good_night_s_sleep is a talk enititled "Jeff Iliff: One more reason to get a good night's sleep"

it states that the brain burns energy and so doing produces by-products. Those by products have to be flushed out before it gets clogged-up and it does it during sleep.

Those by-products include prions. Prions are implicated in Alzheimer's. A life of limited hours of sleep are statistically linked to Alzheimers. A link isn't a prediction, but knowing the odds................. what would you do?

I tell you: I'm off to bed!

Given what I'm having to deal with regarding my parents, it's plenty of sleep for me as well!

You have a source for the prion production in the brain?
