“Most of the Dalai Lamas in the nineteenth century had signally failed to achieve their majorities.”

DLs are, of course, chosen while small children, as they are the reincarnation of the previous office holder (and presumably, therefore, of all previous DLs?). Naturally, they can’t actually run the shop while they’re still in nappies, so the business was/is in the hands of a regent. The ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth DLs all died young; it was generally assumed they were bumped off by their regents.

“The twelfth Dalai Lama met an end more extraordinary than most when his regent arranged for his bedroom ceiling to collapse on his head, with fatal consequences.”

Luckily for posterity Twelve did live long enough to leave his footprint in a stone.

Am trying to look something up and came across this very old unanswered post.

There seems to be some confusion here. While I see a couple of mentions of a footprint in stone legend belonging to the 12th Dalai Lama (Trinley Gyatso), it seems it is the 10th Dalai Lama (Tsultrim Gyatso) who is suspected of being killed by a collapsed ceiling.

As it is, the official history is that Tsultrim died from illness, and there is no record of a collapsed building, but there is a letter to the Chinese Emperor 40 years after his death which relates the story that he was found under the rubble of his collapsed ceiling, with a large wound on his neck which might not have been from the masonry.

I haven't read Rennison's book, but if he does indeed relate this story to Trinley, he may have made a mistake. Trinley fell ill during the winter, and instead of confining himself to bed, it seems he tried meditating himself back to health. He was found in a seated meditation position, dead.

As an interesting aside, Trinley supposedly experienced a vision which told him he would die if he did not practice tantric sex. This might explain why Sting is still around after all this time...

The Dalai Lama described Brand's introduction as "completely informal", and Brand responded: "Did you pick up any spiritual tips?"

The Dalai Lama replied: "I think your openness transfers wonderfully."

If they're just going to keep being reincarnated is there any point in trying to assassinate one?
