I've moved this discussion to the sticky thread at post 1386725. If you want it all formatted nicely you'll have to ask Jenny :-)

Bath would be fine by me as well - being based just to the north of Bristol.

I would be passing through there myself if we wanted to car-pool.

I wrote in the Venting thread:

Took them nearly another week for the parcel to get returned to me and the problem is.....

A hole punched in the top, right over the address part. That can have only happened in a sorting/warehouse capacity, probably from being thrown and landing on something else.
Or someone trying to pick it up with one hand and their finger went through.
Though the tracking number said this box did a trip to Sydney......

There was a bit of a delay in Australia post's reply to me about this, but I may be able to be reimbursed for the cost of this undelivered box that was since returned to me.
(and I was going to give it to my mother this weekend but with the snap lockdown just announced today, they won't be coming now)

Following an interview with a lady at the JobCentre, I have a further interview on Tuesday about getting a grant to help set up my putative mobile handyman business. I could go from "unemployed" to "business owner" in one fell swoop.

Cool! In Aus we have something called NEIS - meaning the New Enterprise Initiative Scheme, run through our welfare department and tech style colleges, except that the business has to be a 'unique' one so can't be another gardener, handyman etc.

Unique here surely means that there is a demonstrable need for the service. It cannot literally mean that no one else, anywhere, is doing the same thing.

If there are already twenty jobbing gardeners in your suburb, then it probably wouldn't make much sense for the welfare system to help another to set up. But if there is no one in crissdee's area doing what he has in mind, and he can show that there are people who would hire him, then good luck to him!

I wish you the best of luck with that, crissdee. There have been many occasions when a handyman would have been, erm, handy, particularly during the period when I was widowed before I remarried.

Don't get me thinking about lonely widows needing to get a man in!!!

Really though, thanks for the thought..

I'm pretty sure that doesn't fall within a handyman's job description...

From what I know, the business I have in mind (but haven't really started up) would qualify because it's a specialist one - aimed at school libraries to clean up the computer catalogue system.

But the program is also difficult, with people only getting a year of extra support/payments still, before the welfare payment is cancelled and they're expected to go it alone.
Many small businesses fail within a year or two.

You will be glad I refrained from an off-colour remark about Jenny's comment. I wonder if 'yorz or bem would have done so....

Many many years ago I knew of a friend of a friend who worked in appliance repair and whose nickname was Bauknecht (predecessor of Whirlpool in Germany). Why? Because their slogan was "Bauknecht knows what women wish for" and so, apparently, did he.

I take it you are unfamiliar with the work of Robin Askwith ;)

And there was I innocently remembering small things like needing a shelf put up or something repaired!

I'm not denying that other... services... might have been welcome though.

Edited because apparently I said the opposite of what I was thinking...

Good news about Emma Raducanu winning the US open. She played 10 games including the 3 qualifying rounds without conceding a set. Incredible. She was unseeded.
