TIL that my now 58 year old brother has never heard of Occam's Razor, not even the concept of it.

Maybe he prefers Gillette.

If he'd spent time in france he may have fallen under the influence of one of the Famous gillette Jones family.

Today I learned that tennisist Simona Halep knows very little about snooker. This is hardly surprising since it isn't really played in Romania, where European billiards - the kind played on a table with no pockets - is the cue sport of choice.

Even so, D-na Halep follows snookerist Mark Selby on Twitter. She's not one of those who follows all and sundry; in fact, she follows only two people and the other is - less surprisingly - a tennis coach. Apparently Mr Selby signed one of his balls for her when he did an exhibition in Romania a couple years back.

It is rather better known that tennisist Roger Federer likes cricket; indeed, he is a member of the same posh cricket club that the good husband is. Unfortunately Herr Federer has another engagement which prevents him attending the World Cup final tomorrow, but there is a simpler explanation for why it is that a Swiss fellow likes cricket. His mom is South African.

Via a cemetery page, I have learnt this:

In Victorian times, professional mourners called mutes were hired and walked behind the hearse. They wore black and deployed a suitably miserable expression despite the fact that they had never even met the deceased or the family

In those days funerals were very elaborate affairs and there was a very strict etiquette in place that gave rules for everything from the colors of mourning dress to mourning timelines that had to be observed. Victorian mourning practices spread throughout Europe and professional mourners began to band together, even going on strike for higher wages. As motorized hearses were introduced into the funeral procession, professional mourners began to be phased out of the ceremony.

That BBC Studios are in preproduction of a new series named "The Watch" based on the Ankh Morpork watch.

Awitt's mention of a cemetery reminded me of something I found on FB.

"If you pay me $50, I will come to your funeral standing a long way off to give the impression of you having had a dark and interesting secret."

Made me smile!

The best part is that the person paying her won't ask for their money back if she doesn't turn up.

With Hugh Laurie as Sam Vimes? Or is that mere speculation?

Today I learned that there is a village in South Wales called Garth. It is one mile from Maesteg with which it is contiguous, but prefers to identify as the village that it once was.

The football team in Garth eschews all the common football team "surnames" such as Town, United, or Rovers, and is called ... wait for it ... Garth Vader !
