Most US press briefings for government at the state level or higher will have an ASL person doing the signing next to them. It's usually a volunteer position at the lower levels, so the government does even have to add anyone to their payroll. That makes it more mystifying when someone pretends to know ASL and then does some made-up thing for the signs. This has happened multiple times. Why they do this is never really explained.

Some silent monasteries have their own sign language - the monks all seem to know the football scores by 5 pm on a Saturday.
