I imagine this is too specialised for a QI question, but it’s quinteresting nonetheless. Sinn Fein did not take part in the Sinn Fein Rising of 1916; SF “then a small grouping, was not involved in the [Easter Rising]. But the authorities christened it ‘the Sinn Fein rising’ and the title was afterwards adopted by the separatist movement.”

Odd name for a party, or a rising for that matter - 'we ourselves' - what does it mean exactly?

The 'Us' party? As opposed to the 'Them' party?

Perhaps it's as in "We ourselves should govern ourselves - not be governed by foreigners."

I do like the idea of taking credit for a revolution without having to be shot at, though.
