Hmm, but Paul Gascoigne's nickname probably isn't pronounced gat-za.

Oh, that's annoying. When I watch the show on the iPlayer the spelt it as "gazza" rather than "gatza". I also just checked Wiktionary and it is spelt "gazza" there too.

Gazza is the correct spelling, but Italians (I believe) wouldn't pronounce it as an English person refers to Mr Gascoigne. I can't see S Fry (or S Toksvig) bending pronunciation just for the pun.

That's a shame then.

It is. I find it quite frustrating when an apparently good pun won't work.

Well, it works on paper. Spoken, not so much.

I can't understand why it doesn't work for me then.

It's from the show - 21:50-21:54.

How the hell do you do that, Monz?

1. Found appropriate part of show.
2. Took clip using online tool.
3. Posted clipped section.
4. Posted original show from which I'd taken the clip, with times indicated.

I'd just watched the show, so locating the section in question was reasonably quick.

I didn't even know there was such a tool.

Vincent van Gogh

Just wanted to correct something that Stephen said about van Gogh in this episode. Stephen said that van Gogh was very good at selling paintings. This is contradicted by the van Gogh biography by Stephen Naifeh and Gregory White Smith. According to them van Gogh's time working for Goupil & Cie in The Hague was not very successful - he was too eccentric to deal with customers appropriately and often persuaded potential buyers not to purchase a painting if he didn't like it, telling them exactly what he thought was wrong with it. He was transferred to London to work in the business's mail order department where he wouldn't have to deal with customers in person but even that didn't work out because he couldn't get on with the rest of the staff and so he had to leave the business entirely. It would be interesting to find out exactly which version of van Gogh's career at Goupil (successful or not so successful) is right.
