When talking about magpies there was one quite interesting connection that I was surprised was not mentioned.

As was stated, the Italian for magpie was "gazza". The nickname for Newcastle United F.C. is "The Magpies" and one of their most famous players was Paul "Gazza" Gascoigne. Therefore there was a magpie playing for the Magpies.

Hmm, but Paul Gascoigne's nickname probably isn't pronounced gat-za.

Oh, that's annoying. When I watch the show on the iPlayer the spelt it as "gazza" rather than "gatza". I also just checked Wiktionary and it is spelt "gazza" there too.

Gazza is the correct spelling, but Italians (I believe) wouldn't pronounce it as an English person refers to Mr Gascoigne. I can't see S Fry (or S Toksvig) bending pronunciation just for the pun.

That's a shame then.

It is. I find it quite frustrating when an apparently good pun won't work.

Well, it works on paper. Spoken, not so much.

1. Found appropriate part of show.
2. Took clip using online tool.
3. Posted clipped section.
4. Posted original show from which I'd taken the clip, with times indicated.

I'd just watched the show, so locating the section in question was reasonably quick.
