In the "Messy" episode (Series M, Ep. 14), it was said that Louis XIV had several muffs including one made out of panther skin.

However, according to the outtakes on the Series B DVD, it was stated that there was no such animal as a panther, and that it should be a black leopard.

Well-spotted*, Ian.

*NPI.
Which leads me to ask if black leopards are completely black, or can spots still be made out on their coats?

You can still make out the spots in their coats, although they're faint.

When talking of Louis XIV's muffs, black leopards might be more likely to have been used, but I have a feeling "black panther" more often refers to black jaguars. It doesn't really matter in this instance, though.

What was the function of the muffs? How did it save Louis?

We have made a tour-map on Louis XIV based on his life. However, we don't know anything about the relation of muffs and Louis XIV or how it saved him. Please help us by telling how it saved him to enrich our content and contribute to spread the knowledge!

The only thing I can think a muff would save him from would be from having cold hands in an era with no central heating!
