Being german i was a bit surprised to be educated about Krampus,
as i never heard of the character.
Where i grew up (incidently northern Bavaria) a somewhat similar
character "Knecht Ruprecht" (literally servant ruprecht - Santa`s little
helper) existed, who punished naughty children by putting them in
a sack and spank them with a broom.
So this differs a bit (maybe not enough to make an honest stink about)
from what i`ve seen on that QI Episode.

I am mildly curious how these facts come into existence and, until proven otherwise i will assume that, this titbid of wisdom was gathered
by some renouned academic figure from some specific region germany (actually, more likely austria in this case) and placarded as fact for all of germany, with the sensitivity of a bucket-fill.
Never to be called into question again, because of its source.
One of many shows of Academic Inbreeding, leading to facts that live in happy dissonance of reality. But i digress...

Alternatively the research of the "elves" restricted itself to wikipedia.

Nevertheless i remain a big fan of the show, which pleasured me with many hours of good-spirited entertainment.
As to the motivation for this post, i can only recommend to google the terms: qi - the german joke.

with heartfelt best wishes to the QI Team, yet entirely disrecpectfully

Klaus Thoma

PS he, who finds grammar and/or spelling errors may keep them

oh, and by the way... Jo Brand was actually correct in that other episode, regarding the pronounciation of "Das Boot"....

Welcome to the forums knurpsi :-)

We have other Germans around here so do stick around (OK our longest-standing German member actually lives in Ireland but she's still German). And we have Dutch people too - and Norwegians and Danes!

Krampus does appear to be mainly an Austrian name for this character. Much the same character is also known as Knecht Ruprecht, Black Peter, and Schmutzli in different areas.

It's a rule of the Elves that Wikipedia is not acceptable as a single source, and indeed there are a fair number of Wikipedia articles which have been edited in the light of information broadcast on QI.

But here is a Reuters piece from 2006, filed from Austria and credited to one Alexandra Zawadil, a name which sounds fairly Austrian.

That was one of the sources for the story as used on the show.

ok, my major nutty on this was just that the terms Krampus, Schmuetzli, were used in the broadcast to describe this tradition for ALL of germany.
Coming to think of it, it`s probably my "local-patriotism" (does not translate at all...) flaring up, thusly being miffed that my beloved childhood trauma, namely Knecht Ruprecht, was not mentioned in this broadcast.
So the more nuanced knowledge was (of course) present with the elves, to blame is Mr. Fry`s appalling delivery of this information by to the public. Sorry, Sue.

glad this is settled! I will get the firewood, pls arrange for the stake :-)

Klaus

PS i bet those dane elves are great!

In case you hang around though, I feel I must provide the disclaimer that PDR's word should not be taken as gospel as to whether there are spelling and grammar mistakes :-P
