According to the latest census, Norwich is the most least religious city in England and Wales.

65 people gave 'Heavy Metal' as their religion.

Also, according to this study http://www.norridge.me.uk/pubs/beertalk/nos.htm the claim that Norwich had '365 pubs- One for every day of the year (and a church for every week)' has never been true- there were always either too many pubs or far too few.

Similarly there were 57 churches at one point but there are now far fewer. So the saying has never quite fitted with reality. http://www.norfolk-norwich.com/norwich/discovering-norwich/churches.php

As a Norwicher I have often thought of having a T-shirt done saying "Proud to live in Britain's most Godless city" - one reason I suppose that our 'fine city' is such a safe place to live. Not nearly so many pubs today, though I was the founder member of (as far as I know) Britain's only dedicated pub morris dance side, Golden Star Morris!

'most least religious'? Make up your mind!

'most least religious' was someone else's term, not mine! But 'Godless' does not necessarily imply 'without religion' since it is perfectly possible to have a godless religion - Buddhism or Taoism for instance. However I think the drift of using the term 'Godless' (which was incidentally applied by the Anglo-Saxons to the marauding Norsemen) is toward a God (capital g) in the sense of monotheism. Norwich has a sizeable population of Chileans and Nicaraguans but they would be the socialists of those countries who sought asylum following right-wing coups so would be more likely to be atheists or at least agnostics; and I once heard (in the local jobcentre) two women conversing in Basque! - there are many Basque speakers in Chile and central America. You only have to look at the names of (say) some of the Argentinian football team, names like Garaikoetxea, Burruchaga (Burutxaga in Basque orthography) and so on. Terrific language, Basque.
