I don't think it was as clear as you remember it was.

In June Clinton enjoyed a comfortable lead in the polls, sometimes by double digits, but by the first week of July that lead had dropped to averaging between 1-3 points, and several polls even showing a lead for Trump - he had a huge momentum on the fortnight before Johnson was made Foreign Secretary. One NBC poll even had him 7 points ahead, and NBC weren't exactly biased for Trump.

As disjointed as the Republicans are over whether to follow Trump or actually have consistent party policies, they share one common goal: to beat the Democrats. If they can continue to successfully demonise Democrats at every turn then they will continue to get just enough power regardless of themselves.

Portland (Maine) Police resign en masse from Rapid Response Crowd Control Unit in support of claimed right to assault women:

Here's the alleged crime in question.

Once the photographer is pushed onto the ground the cop makes a baton strike to her head for no reason. If cops are resigning from the Rapid Response Unit because they are being held to account for baton striking people in the head then they should be sacked and banned from law-enforcement for life IMHO..

Love the "Officers are taking lawful action" voice in the background. Like silvery or woody, but with higher ferric content...

There is a scary number of people who balk at the idea of the police being held accountable in all but the most egregious of crimes against the public.

And not only in the US.

It's not relevant to this particular discussion so I'll be brief, but an office of the West Mercia Police has today been found guilty of manslaughter, for his involvement in the death of the the former footballist Dalian Atkinson in 2016.

According to the BBC, this was the first conviction of a police officer in the UK for murder or manslaughter for over thirty years.

Looking at this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_killings_by_law_enforcement_officers_in_the_United_Kingdom

When you consider in the US the number of people killed by law enforcement is nearly 1000 in 2020, as opposed to 4 in the UK, it's still a very rare event in the UK, and looking at many events on that list it seems tend to have more ramifications (as in several officer have been taken to court, other events have led to inquests and changes have been implemented).

The low numbers on this side of the pond is mainly, I would suggest, because our police do not carry guns. A single squeeze of a trigger to solve a problem is too tempting.

If anyone dies at the hands of the police in Britain, there is an automatic referral to external enquiry procedures. Thankfully it is rare.

I was surprised by the figure of nearly 1,000 in a year in America, as I had heard much lower figures, in double-figures, but I have not seen the stats.

As it is in the USA.

Not quite as "external" as it should be. Usually former cops employed by the police department. "We investigated ourselves and found we did nothing wrong."

The fact they demanded $100k bail and he could potentially face 40 years jail (two charges, each carrying possible 20 years), how does anyone think this is serving the people, democracy, and fighting fraud and corruption?

Yes indeed. I don't know whether the kompromat is the legendary pee tape or not, and in fact I rather doubt it and think it far more likely to be financial shenanigans, but I do hope at least some Trump supporters will consider their support for him in light of this. They probably won't believe it though. I'll be interested to see if it turns up on the PBS News Hour this evening.

Trump supporters are so far gone at this stage that he could rape their parents and their children and they would still make excuses for him.

At least with financial crimes he has the chance of going to prison for the rest of his life. His family don't have his charisma or misplaced confidence, so there won't be a political legacy no matter how much they try to force one.
