I believe that one 'difficult' issue is that of laundry. How do you keep your underchungas clean on a very limited water supply, and no possibility of hanging out to dry outside?

Indeed - the whole mission from take-off (well "departure from Earth Orbit" anyway) to return has to either be based on 100% water recycling and there's a LOT of research going into how this can be achieved with minimum energy demands. At least that *was* the primary concept until the recent discoveries suggesting that significant water resources may actually the available on Mars to "top up" the supply.

But they'd still need a recycling system for the journeys there and back. One suggestion to avoid the laundry probalem has been for the crew to to avoid wearing clothes as far as possible during the voyage (no, really!). So Mars could be initially colonised by nudists...

As bulk is not an issue, could disposable undercrackers be a solution?

The general principle they're trying to use is to make the mission free of "consumables" so that the mission length can be varied without worrying about running short on supplies. This isn't 100% achievable, but the idea is to not have anything as a consumable where there's an alternative option. No undies means fewer disposables than some undies, and if the spacecraft cabin environment is warm enough clothes would not be needed.

Andy Wier's original idea for the book (which spawned the film) arose out of a discussion around how you would feed a Mar mission crew for an extended period. Applying the "minimum consumables" approach suggested that whilst 10kg of the required vitamins and minerals [etc] in pill form could keep a crew going for years, the basic food calories needed space and bulk. That led to a though experiment about whether they could be grown on site, and that led to the story. There isn't very much that's technically wrong with the approach described in the book (the film glosses over a lot of the detail) and NASA are putting further work into exploring the concept because it could save *tons* in mission payload mass.

Well, I've put my money where my mouth is and donated 20 bucks to the Mars Society:

If it is permitted to volunteer somebody for this trip, then I'm in! :-p

Misunderstanding. I was going to volunteer somebody else (Mr T).
After his lift off, things might perk up a bit here on earth.
And when I said I was in, I meant donating something to that good cause.

It's a bit unfair on Mars to dump Trump there, innit? All the pollution from his hair and skin colour?

With his skin colour he'd be well camouflaged.

Mars actually isn't that orange (NASA "recalibrated" the colours in the photos).

It must, on average, be redder than Earth, though, surely?

I think we need more empirical data on this. Let's just send him up there and we'll easily be able to tell if we can see him from here or not.

Brilliant plan. If we're setting up a project team to set this up I want my code-name to be Aragorn.
