Something I learned from Rev. Coles' Twitter feed this morning...

Today is the Feast Day of St. Bugga of Thanet.

Also on Rev Mr Coles' Twitter feed there is a picture of a boy of thirteen wearing a monocle.

But from context, I'm not entirely clear as whether that is a youthful Richard Coles or a youthful Jacob Rees-Mogg. Neither did anything so working class as to go to a state school, so maybe both could have gotten away with a monocle. But which is it?

If it's this indispensable dictionary illustration of the term Backpfeifengesicht, that's Rees-Mogg:

Something tells me Richard Coles would've pulled that one off with rather more panache...

I can think of dogs that have more natural panache than Mr R-M.

Severn bridges

A couple of inaccuracies in that article:

Quote:
"You've always had to pay someone; a ferryman, a railway company or a bridge toll collector to cross the Severn Estuary - so Monday's removal of the tolls is a hugely significant moment, especially in Wales."

Not entirely true. Walking or cycling over the original Severn Bridge has been free since it opened in 1966.

Quote:
Shortly after the M4 bridge reopens on Monday, the M48 original Severn crossing will shut westbound until Wednesday for the tolls there to be dismantled.

Further work will be carried out in 2019 to return both routes to a three-lane motorway with the usual 70mph speed limit.

It'll be impossible to return the old bridge to a three-lane motorway - it's only two lanes wide each way!

On this day in 1961, Dr Erwin Schrödinger died at the age of 73 in Vienna.

Or did he?!?

Maybe we should open his coffin and find out.

A nice little snippet of information that I learnt from Twitter this morning...

June 8th, 1949 - George Orwell's "1984" is published.

...12,719 days later...

April 4th, 1984 - "It was a bright, cold day in April and the clocks were striking thirteen."

...12,719 days later...

January 30th, 2019.

We are now as far in the future from "1984" as 1984 was when "1984" was published.

Which itself was 320 years to the day since Charles I was executed on Whitehall. He wore two shirts in case anyone thought his shivering was fear rather than the cold.

320 years later, both Ringo and John borrowed their wives' coats to cope with the cold.
