|QUESTION: What causes stomach ulcers?
FORFEIT: Spicy Food, Stress
ANSWER: A bacteria, Helicobacter pylori.
Barry J. Marshall and J. Robin Warren won the Nobel
Prize for medicine in 2005, for their discovery that
gastritis and stomach ulcers are caused by a bacteria
called Helicobacter pylori.
The two found great resistance to their theories to
begin with, the medical world were not ready for
conventional wisdom to be so thoroughly debunked, and
expensive drugs had been developed to treat such
problems. Marshall became desperate for recognition
of his ideas and so decided to take drastic measures,
he drank a Petri dish full of the Helicobacter pylori
bacteria, and sure enough he soon came down with a
severe case of gastritis, which when tested was
swimming with the bacteria. Peptic ulcers can now be
cured by a short regimen of antibiotics.
