Now to 'D' for Deutsch.

What's the German for 'sausage-dog'?

While the English word for a 'sausage-dog' dachshund is a direct translation from the German for 'badger-hound', in German the word for the same dog is 'ein Dackel'.

The Dutch for dachshund is 'Teckel'.

Popularly supposed to have originated in Germany somewhere between the 16th and 18th century, some theories hold that the sculptured reliefs of the Tekel Dog on Egyptian tombs are in fact ancestors of this breed.

There are six different varieties of dachshund which vary in size and hair-style, but all of them are, in the words of HL Mencken, "a half-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long".

They were originally bred for hunting badgers, though they are equally good at running foxes to ground. Miniature dachshunds take on rabbits, hares, weasels and stoats.

All varieties have problems with their backs because of the tendency to breed them to be longer.

They also tend to suffer from baldness.

Dachshunds come in the following solid or 'self' colours: red, cream, black and tan, black and cream, chocolate and tan, blue and tan, and isabella (fawn) and tan. All dachshunds have one, and only one, self color. The patterns found in dachshunds are dapple, double dapple, brindle, sable, and piebald. Any pattern can be superimposed over any self, or solid, color; for instance, black and tan dapple, red brindle, chocolate and tan piebald.

Because of their association with Germany, dachshunds were sometimes stoned to death on the street during WW1.

SAUSAGE DOG (Awwww...)
