Something I've wanted to know for ages but never asked because doctors are pushed for time and it didn't seem immediately relevant: when a doctor or nurse puts their palm on your chest or stomach and hits the back of their hand with the fingers of the other, what are they trying to find out?

They are probably using their hand as a stethoscope and 'listening' for hollow sounds....

Well this is generally called percussion, which is conducted to check out the different body conditions through difference in sounds. Percussion is a technique of tapping on a surface to conclude the underlying structure, typically used to diagnose the condition of the thorax or abdomen. This process is likely to diagnose diseases such as pneumothorax, emphysema etc.
