Question: What is duckspeak?

Forfeits: The language that ducks speak.

Answer: In the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, duckspeak is a Newspeak term meaning literally to quack like a duck or to speak without thinking. Duckspeak can be either good or bad, depending on who is speaking, and if what they are saying is in following with the ideals of Big Brother. To be speaking rubbish and lies (bad), or to be speaking rubbish and lies for the good of "The Party" (good). There's a lot of duckspeak about today - it's the political language used to answer questions put by Jeremy Paxman - a language deliberately emptied of meaning, used to show the loyalty of the speaker or writer to the ruling ideology.

Notes:
Newspeak
The basic idea behind Newspeak was to remove all shades of meaning from language, leaving simple dichotomies (pleasure and pain, happiness and sadness, good thoughts and thoughtcrimes) which reinforce the total dominance of the State. A staccato rhythm of short syllables was also a goal, further reducing the need for deep thinking about language. Successful Newspeak meant that there would be fewer and fewer words - dictionaries would get thinner and thinner.

In addition, words with opposite meanings were removed as redundant, so "bad" became "ungood." Words with comparative and superlative meanings were also removed, so "better" became "plusgood", and "best" likewise became "doubleplusgood." In this manner, as many words as possible were removed from the language. The ultimate aim of Newspeak was to reduce even the dichotomies to a single word that was a "yes" of some sort: an obedient word with which everyone answered affirmatively to what was asked of them. So the ultimate aim of newspeak was duckspeak - articulated speech issue from the larynx without involving the higher brain centres at all.

DuckSpeak
There is a duckspeak translator at http://speeches.com/quack.aspx which takes speeches by politicians and removes all the meaningless invocations and repetative slogans and replaces them with the word 'quack'. This means you can then see what the politician has actually said. For example this is George W Bush's 2006 State of the Union Address put through a duckspeak translator:

every QUACK i'm invited QUACK QUACK rostrum QUACK i'm humbled QUACK QUACK privilege QUACK QUACK mindful QUACK QUACK QUACK we've QUACK together. QUACK QUACK gathered QUACK QUACK capitol dome QUACK moments QUACK QUACK mourning QUACK QUACK achievement. QUACK confront QUACK QUACK issues QUACK us QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK goodwill QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK -- QUACK QUACK QUACK
QUACK QUACK part. tonight QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK -- QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK stronger.

[ Every time I'm invited to this rostrum, I'm humbled by the privilege, and mindful of the history we've seen together. We have gathered under this Capitol dome in moments of national mourning and national achievement. We have served America through one of the most consequential periods of our history -- and it has been my honor to serve with you.

In a system of two parties, two chambers, and two elected branches, there will always be differences and debate. But even tough debates can be conducted in a civil tone, and our differences cannot be allowed to harden into anger. To confront the great issues before us, we must act in a spirit of goodwill and respect for one another -- and I will do my part. Tonight the state of our Union is strong -- and together we will make it stronger.]
Dubya is clarly a doubleplus good doublethinker.

If you take the start of George W Bush's 2006 State of the Union Address and put it through the duckspeak translator at http://speeches.com/quack.aspx which takes speeches by politicians and removes all the meaningless invocations and repetative slogans and replaces them with the word 'quack' you get the above nonsense.

What he said was:

Dubya is clearly a doubleplus good doublethinker.
