I probably would have asked the same. Silly Brits with their titles. ;-)

Says a person who comes from the country which gave us Vennegoor of Hesselink !?

Couldn't the silly Cloggie decide what his name was?

That is actually a perfectly good name from the Low West Germanic cultural continuum that doesn't cause the least confusion to the savvy at all...

Vennegoor of Hesselinks are thus named because, way back in the 17th century, two farming families in the Enschede area of Holland intermarried. Both the Vennegoor and Hesselink names carried equal social weight, and so - rather than choose between them - they chose to use both.

As, in fact, with Richmond and Gordon.

The 5th Duke of Gordon died childless, but his sister was married to the 5th Duke of Richmond - and so in due course both titles passed to the 6th Duke.

If Gordon had been perceived as an inferior title, he'd just have dropped it. The dual Duke also held the title Duke of Lennox, but he considered it less good and his family no longer uses that title.

Clearly though, he couldn't decide whether Richmond or Gordon was a better title, and so he used both.

His son uses one of the Duke's titles as a courtesy title - another double barrelled job, Earl of March & Kinrara.

Get drunk enough and his name would be Early March in Canberra.

I don't know, I found it amusing.

Who are these Earls who March and Can RaRa?

Is that some sort of American cheerleader thing?

They should book them for The Edinburgh Tattoo

If it's free and there are comfy seats I might go but I dont do audience participation.

And in NO circumstances do I shout OI - or even a restrained oi

Tho if I have to queue for the loos I'll probably miss the big names. I might just stay home and watch it on the tv

These Earls... Are they old? It's not going to be sad old blokes out of step and sticking out an occasional hip and letting out a flutey and warbled RA?

Nobody wants to be unkind to the elderly, but if they are that sad, it's rather miserable that the family are still hiring them out.

I don't think I noticed this when it was originally posted back in April. Is it ever correct to say "My name is Mr Smith"?

Well I'm two months late replying, but I assume this was in response to post 1067311 - dated April 2014 - which was actually 5teve's last post to the forum, his first being in October 2010. So you're nearly eight years late with your welcome, which 5teve is unlikely to see anyway.

Is this a record?

(There seems to be no coherence to this thread since it was revived by Feralcat in post 1280966.)
