Q. When is a tit not a tit?

A. When it's a long-tailed tit.

Blue tits, great tits etc are all members of the Parus family, but long-tailed tits are members of the Aegithalidae family and so are not true tits.

I hope this information will be used in the sober and serious manner in which it has been presented and that it will not be an excuse for smutty innuendo.

Long-tailed tits are also known as long-tailed bushtits.
It's not often you find an animal with the words 'tail', 'bush' and 'tit' in its name.
Another fact is that they are highly successful little breeders.

Long tailers are among the most charming and cute little birds. We have not seen our little local gang all winter, and are thus worried about their well-being. It must be said that we tend to see them only in cold weather; we think we are on the edge of their patch, so only come visiting when food is scarce nearer to home.
A few miles away at our coal merchants they have a large flock who seem to nest quite close to the house and yard.
bem, do you know of anything they especially like to eat? They have only been seen in our garden eating peanuts and fatballs, but we would go out of our way to get the right stuff to entice the little darlings into our garden.

Meanwhile ot seems our sparrow poulation may have tumbled --- it seems but a few weeks ago that we could see 20 or more stuffing themselves with seed and peanut and bread, but currently only groups of 5 or 6. I think the relatively warm but fearsomely wet weather over this winter is having an effect already on bird numbers and behaviour.

Of course long-tailed tits are tits. The clue is in the word "tits". So they're not classified under Paridae? Just shows that the common word doesn't mean the same as one biological family.

That's why it is both a tit and not a tit at the same time. It's kinda like a Schroedinger's tit.

They do like suet and peanuts. Some people say to break the peanuts up as their beaks are so small they struggle to break them. They ate also supposed to like crumbs of cheese but I don't know how you stop other birds getting them first.
The cold kills off large numbers of long-tailed tits which is why it is good that they breed so easily.
We used to have lots in our old garden but don't see many birds at all in our new garden.

For those who like tits, do they also like boobies?

That's another type of bird, related to the gannet, for those sniggering at the back.

Good grief, what kind of people do you think frequent these boards?
:-)
