Over on the Tube Challenge Forum, where I also take part, there's a parallel version of the New Number Fact Game, called simply "Counting":

http://www.tubeforum.co.uk/forum/index.php?f=33&t=2753&rb_v=viewtopic&start=735

When I first joined this forum we were about 300 posts behind, but we've put on a spurt recently and are now only 100 posts behind. I reckon it's possible to overtake them soon, which leads to the intriguing idea of a competition. Would anyone be interested in taking part? I'd have to declare my loyalty for one side or the other of course. There would also have to be a rule against using the other team's facts. None of this would start until we'd drawn level.

Is it feasible?

Congratulations, QI-ers. You have finally pulled ahead of the Tube Challenge Forum:

After agonizing for some time about my loyalties, I'm going to stick with the Tube Challengers. They're a highly competitive bunch!

You missed a trick there, QI-ers. This was the Tube Challengers' entry for 1227:

Anyway, the Tube Challengers are ahead again. The gloves are off now...

Is anyone interested in putting this competition onto a formal footing? The rules we play to at the Tube Challenge Forum are as follows:

1 - Each game post must contain a number one higher than the subject of the previous game post (i.e. numbers must be consecutive integers).
2 - Each game post must contain a non-trivial, verifiable piece of information about that number, the more original the better.
3 - No player may make two consecutive game posts.
4 - If a number is duplicated by more than one person, then the duplicate post(s) will not be treated as a game post. The person posting the duplicate post will be able to make the next game post.
5 - Posts containing no reference to the next number in sequence are not game posts and should be ignored by other players.

To which I propose adding:

6 - No player may make posts in both forums during one round of the competition.
7 - No player may reproduce a fact that was posted in the other forum.

I suggest the winner of the first round is the first forum to get to 1300. Anyone interested in taking part?

I don't know how other people feel so I'm just saying what I think.

I'm not interested in taking part; I'd prefer for the number fact thread to stay as it is.

Me too - I'm happy to keep adding, but not worried about a competition.

OK. I think this forum did very well to get ahead of the Tube Challengers, actually, and it's certainly given the Tube Challenge effort a new lease of life. Even if there's no formal challenge, I'll still be keeping an eye on this forum as it gives the Tube Challengers a benchmark to measure their efforts by.

Just for the record, the Tube Challengers got to 1300 first:

http://www.tubeforum.co.uk/forum/index.php?f=33&t=2753&rb_v=viewtopic&start=900

QI was ahead for quite a long time, in fact, and I was expecting this forum to run away with it.

In response to Alfred E Neuman:

A little while ago I felt that the parallel "Counting" game on the Tube Challenge Forum was starting to run out of steam. When we got to 1150 there were no posts for about two weeks, and I thought that might be the end of it. When I pointed out that this forum was starting to nudge ahead, though, it gave the Tube Challengers a new lease of life and they started racing to regain the lead.

So, as someone who wants the Tube Challenge game to flourish, it's in my interests that this forum makes an effort to keep up. There's not much fun in racing someone if they're not really interested in participating in the race. I appreciate the comments made above by Strawberry and Big Martin, and no one can force people to take part in a race if they don't want to. But QI has been ahead twice now, so people here have clearly got the motivation. It's only meant as a bit of friendly rivalry - no hostility intended at all! I enjoy reading the facts posted here and often wish I'd thought of them myself.

Incidentally, has this game ever been played anywhere else? It strikes me as an odd coincidence that two completely separate forums should have come up with the same idea and reached the same total at about the same time. It wasn't even intended that way on the Tube Challenge Forum - as a joke, someone started a thread where people simply started counting in sequence, and other people joined in. Then, to make it more interesting, they started adding little comments to their posts, and gradually it evolved into a fully-fledged game (although not before the administrator had closed the thread down because it was getting too silly). Now it's almost an institution.

Good luck with the QI version anyway. How far you do hope to get?

The unofficial battle so far:

1300: QI 26/8/14, TC 21/8/14 (TC ahead by 5 days)
1400: QI 10/11/14, TC 6/11/14 (TC ahead by 4 days)
1500: QI 22/1/15, TC 22/1/15 (QI ahead by < 2 hours)
1600: QI 20/2/15, TC 20/2/15 (QI ahead by < 3 hours)
1700: QI 21/3/15, TC 20/6/15 (QI ahead by 91 days)
1800: QI 30/5/15, TC 11/7/15 (QI ahead by 42 days)
1900: QI 21/7/15, TC 1/8/15 (QI ahead by 11 days)
2000: QI 18/9/15, TC 10/8/15 (TC ahead by 39 days)
2100: QI 7/10/15, TC 8/9/15 (TC ahead by 29 days)
2200: TC 17/10/15

Fascinating stuff! For people who claim not to be interested in a competition, you seem to have done remarkably well - at least until recently. I'm sure you'll be back.

Guy - you might gather from the predominantly monologue-nature of this thread that essentially no one on here is actually interested in running this as some kind of competition.

It's not really our sort of thing...

Well, we've been competing against you even if you haven't been competing against us! Our game fell into the doldrums for a couple of months, so we set ourselves the target of getting to 2000 before you (which we did, by 55). It was really quite exciting.

It's only a bit of fun, anyway. I hope no one here objects.

Of course no one objects. It should be abundantly clear by now that no one here really cares.

Well I wasn't really going to mention it, I just wanted to come over and congratulate you all on getting to 2000. It's quite an incredible achievement - you should have made more of it.

And that's probably where we differ - to us it ain't an achievement, it just helps keep us off the street. :-)
