The word "Domino" is a French word for a black and white hood worn by Catholic priests in winter.
Domino Games
The oldest domino sets date from around 1120 A.D. Dominoes, as most of the Western world knows them, however, appear to be a Chinese invention. The name of the inventor cannot be traced.
The History of Dominos
The game appeared first in Europe in 18th Century Italy, possibly in the courts of Venice and Naples. Although domino tiles are clearly of Chinese inheritance, there is debate over whether the game played by Europeans was brought by the Chinese to Europe in the fourteenth century or, in fact, was invented independently.

The thing about the introduction of dominoes to Europe was that once they were adopted by one country, every other country followed, one after the other.

We must add Cribbage to any discussion of Dominoes, because in the time of my mis-spent youth, dominoes and cribbage were the only games allowed to be played in a pub. Reference:

The only games that could be played for money, at any rate.

I think there are a handful of others that may now be played for "modest stakes".

But surely games like darts and shove ha'penny could always be played, just as long as there was no money changing hands.

We used to play Newmarket for modest stakes. Matchsticks are modest stakes aren't they? They're not very big, as stakes go, at any rate.

Big enough to destroy a vampire bat perhaps, or build a very small fence.
