This is another good one. I know I've read it. I might even own it, but I'm not sure.

Was it just a very bad edit or did Reg manage 40 words this episode? (Of the normal QI; XL still to be seen). That has to be a record for non-presence.

Don't get me wrong: I quite like RGH, but was he that quiet or was the edit just that obscuring of his contributions?

The non-XL record will still be Anneka Rice, series B.

There are a few 6 letter words with the letters in alphabetical order if we allow double letters. Abbess, adders, flossy, effort, chills, chilly etc.

(N.B. this does not count as "wriiting in".)

Using some "internet 6 letters word list" with 15,788 words. No double letters, because that's not compliant with L1 < L2:

1 abhors
2 almost
3 begins
4 begirt
5 beknot
6 bijoux
7 biopsy
8 chimps
9 chinos
10 chintz
11 dehort
12 ghosty

using L1 <= L2, like you:

1 abbess
2 abhors
3 accent
4 accept
5 access
6 accost
7 adders
8 adeems
9 afflux
10 almost
11 begins
12 begirt
13 beknot
14 bellow
15 bijoux
16 billow
17 biopsy
18 bloops
19 blotty
20 cellos
21 chills
22 chilly
23 chimps
24 chinos
25 chintz
26 chippy
27 chirrs
28 chitty
29 chivvy
30 choosy
31 choppy
32 clotty
33 dehort
34 dekkos
35 efflux
36 effort
37 fillos
38 floors
39 floosy
40 floppy
41 flossy
42 ghosty
43 gloppy
44 glossy
45 hillos
46 knotty

"knotty" really is the last one, the internet list of words is longer.

The episode was moderately OK, but I was disappointed that there didn't seem to be much effort to keep the questions on topic.

Apart from the brief not-quite-discussion of the terms kitsch, retro, and tacky at the beginning of the show, the rest just seemed to be a ragbag of random trivia.

Can I refer to myself as that? I like the term, however not-positively you meant it.

From talking to one of the production staff last year, I get the impression that Reg is normally that quiet. The way it was told, he normally sits there utterly silent for 90% of the show, then comes out with one or two really cracking lines. When the show's edited, all of his really cracking lines are kept, and all of the silence is cut out, making him look like he's really involved and funny.

I guess this time even the edit couldn't save him.

Got to admit, I'm not a fan of RDH, I find him extremely inconsistent, and when he's drying out he resorts to joking about racism which I think is so cliche by now, but that's just me.

Overall there were some decent bits of Qi information and gags, but I was also a little confused by what was holding everything together. Then again, I think it gets harder to be able to lump a whole series into one letter now, and it might be worth considering ditching the letter system and just agreeing on more clearly defined episodes.

I suppose, in the interests of honesty, I should repeat here what I said in my daily TV viewing survey yesterday...

Does anybody else think QI is becoming less of a round-table discussion and more of a "Stephen Fry presents interesting facts" show? Fry asks a question, to which there may or may not be a few limp guesses at the answer, after which Fry gives a mini-lecture about what the answer is and why. Panellists might contribute a few lines, then it's on to Fry asking the next question. What happened to "nobody's expected to know the answers; we don't care if your answer is right as long as it's interesting"? And all the wide-ranging dinner-table type conversation?

Also FOR GOD'S SAKE, FRY, LEAVE YOUR DAMN NOSE ALONE. This goes right the way back to the first series. Once you notice it, you can't un-notice it.

I've been called 'a goldmine of useless information'.
Quite chuffed with that.
