“Men fight and lose the battle, and the thing that they fought for comes about in spite of their defeat, and when it comes turns out not to be what they meant, and other men have to fight for what they meant under another name."

“If you believe in the existence of fairies at the bottom of the garden you are deemed fit for the bin. If you believe in pathogenesis, ascension, transubstantiation and all the rest of it you are deemed fit to govern the country.”

- Jonathan Meades, writing in The Times, quoted in The Freethinker, December 1999

At Sunday school, the vicar asks his flock of tinies: “What has a cold, wet nose, likes having his tummy tickled, and runs after sticks and balls?”

There’s a long, worried silence, until eventually one six-year-old puts his hand up. “I know the answer should be ‘Jesus,’” he says, apologetically, “but it sounds awfully like a dog to me.”

(This is actually a bit of foaflore which predates the invention of the “forward to all” button; it was probably transmitted by fax in ye olde days. It is found all over the internet today - sometimes it’s a squirrel, sometimes it’s a fish. Intriguingly, the version I clipped years ago comes from an undated issue of “Dogs Today” and actually names the reverend concerned.

Apocryphal as it no doubt is, I do feel it rather neatly sums up the feeling that must sometimes come over QI panellists when they hear the typical Gen Ig question, and try to avoid pressing the buzzer which, they know, will activate the forfeit klaxon!)

There's a lot of history that isn't fit to repeat itself.

There is a good fable wherein the wise men of the kingdom condense all the knowledge of the world into a single sentence : 'This too shall pass'. I like that.

Closer for a show on language / dialect - a language spoken by only two people in the world - and they aren't on speaking terms with each other:

Quote:
Munichi ... is a recently extinct language which was spoken in the village of Munichis, about 10 miles/ 16 km West of Yurimaguas, Loreto Region, Peru. The last known mother-tongue speaker, Victoria Huancho Icahuate, died in the late 1990s, though some people remain in the village who know a few phrases. In 1988, there were two mother-tongue speakers, but they had not met since the 1970s.

Few interesting ones:
“Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and, departing, leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time.” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“In prosperity you may count on many friends; if the sky becomes overcast you will be alone.” - Ovid

“The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.” - Carl Sagan

“The only difference between doctors and lawyers is that lawyers merely rob you, whereas doctors rob you and kill you, too.” - Anton Chekhov

I did a little research using Google Books and the earliest attribution I found was to Gandhi in "Continuum, Volumes 7-8" (1969). But since this attribution came more than 20 years after his death, I don't think he really said this.
