It's probably too well known - or by contrast too little-known to be knowable - but I've always chuckled at the fact that in 1984 the media went non-stop on "Has Orwell's 1984 come true?" when, of course, the title of the novel came from the year in which it was written: 1948. The book was about his present, not our past.

(Bloody cheek he had, banging on about government surveillance, when it turns out he was a spy for the British secret police.)

That’s a fascinating factlet about Big Brother - I’ve never heard that before. I wonder if any pictures of the original still exist? If so, “Why is this man watching you?” might be a question.

Yes indeed, that'd be a cracker. And there's a linkI've been trying to think of a use for: the Chairman of Endemol (the company that produces Big Brother), Peter Bazalgette, is the great grandson of the guy who built London's drains.

It's awful when a great family declines, isn't it?

'Magisterial' is my favourite word.

I had been toying with a question on the lines of 'why has television gone down the drain?' but this is definitely better.

George Orwell’s father worked in the Opium department of the Indian Civil Service.

Now that 1984 is long gone, people are no writing works set in 2084.

One is this play written and performed by Theatre Royal Plymouth People's Company. In their 2084, everyone is being watched, but as part of a massive realty TV show. (Source)

There is also an American novel called 2084 - A Tale of Post America by W. Milton Timmons. (Source)
