"Sharapova" isn't quite rude in English if pronounced correctly in Russian (i.e. stress on the ra) but is leaning that way.

On another topic, SF stated that the 'ciabatta' loaf had been invented by an Italian baker in 1982.

I beg to differ. I stayed with an Italian lady in Urbino in 1967 and was given ciabatta to eat - and loved it. I ate it again in Milan in 1969.

Anybody else encounter it that far back - or even earlier?

Not me but that sounds like good evidence. Perhaps the name was registered in 1982 rather than the thing invented?

Welcome to QI, anniepw :-)

The possibility that Ciabatta has existed long before 1982 has been made by quite a few people, including leading Italian bakers. The problem is that no one has been able to provide evidence of this, it does not seem to appear on any menu, price list, news article, etc, prior to 1982.

Could it be that up to 1982 Ciabatta was something people had in their own homes, and only then someone decided to give it a try on a restaurant menu? After all, back then people wouldn't have posted their Italian mamma lunch on FB.
