Lovely episode, as usual. I had been missing the show, it's great to get a fresh shot of QI in my veins while I wait for K to start. I'll be taking a double dose when the XL airs tomorrow, of course.

I have a correction for you. Stephen said that the inventor of the shopping trolley (or 'cart' as we call them in the US) was called Sylvan Goldberg, and as Goldberg is my surname, I did a quick search about him, only to find his name was actually GoldMAN! So there you have it: the inventor of the shopping trolley was Sylvan Goldman, born in Oklahoma in 1898. Other inventions by Goldman included the grocery sacker, the folding inter-office basket carrier, and the handy milk bottle rack. Goldman also invented the baggage cart.

The sound recording played on the show (the 1860 Martinville phonautograph) was actually out of tune (?). It was thought that it was a 10 second recording of a woman singing Claire de la lune, however it is now understood to be in fact a 20 second recording of Martinville himself singing the piece slower than usual.

Here's what I believe was played on the show: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Au_Clair_de_la_Lune_%281860%29.ogg

and here's what is now generally accepted: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1860-Scott-Au-Clair-de-la-Lune-05-09.ogg

I think theres something very beautiful about listening to his voice, knowing it was the first of it's kind ever. Very haunting, yet beautiful.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the slinky segment before, although everything else was new to me, so there's no way I've watched the episode before and forgotten about it. Are they reusing facts?
