Platypus was on the box last night. It might be the earliest of all the "mammal" (kind of) species.

Definitely a mammal but the rest aren't all descended from platypuses. Almost by definition non-egg laying mammals are descended from egg laying ones (monotremes). Not sure how old platypuses are.

You mean the duckbilled platypus. "Platypus" is really the name of a beetle, which the duckbilled mammal is named after.

I was intrigued about the assertion that only rats apart from us have a sense of humour. I would have thought that other apes apart from us have this ability.
