I seemed to have got drawn back into playing this. Had a first very bad round but got 4245 pts on my last guess. I need to research road markings of the world.

Oooh. Just got 5000 points but only because i cheated. There was a street name. Slightly annoying that I couldn't make the most of my cheating. On the version I've got you have to pinpoint on a map. I could have done with somewhere to enter a post code.

Sounds like you're playing the UK, I wouldn't consider reading signs (even street signs) cheating. I can usually only identify a language by them (playing global), but beyond that, you'd have to really know a city to begin with to make use of a street name.

What are really helpful are the interstate signs - I may only be able to identify a country or region, but a busy enough interstate can be found on a map, then it's just a matter of tracing the line until whichever city name or exit is found on a sign.

I am playing the world (mwahahaha) but chanced to get a UK one. Another hint I've picked up is to check the state of the verges if there are no other clues.

Also useful to arm yourself with this knowledge, if you haven't.
Map of Street View Coverage

Although it won't help you for the 360-degree photos or walking tours, which can be ANYWHERE.

Something I can't do now that I thought I could previously is to zoom in on that old crisp packet on a verge in order to scrutinise it for clues in the way of brand or flavour.

Well camera quality depends on where you are. In most modern cities, you can just about eavesdrop on pedestrians' texts, and I've gotten pretty far with the zoom feature. In southern Africa or the Outback, the photos look as though they were taken with a phone....with a rotary dial.

I swear I once got 24,000 on the world map but it took me a good 2 and a half hours of virtual road-tripping
