TOPIC: Donkey's Breakfast

QUESTION: Why won't a sailor eat a donkey's breakfast?

FORFEIT: It'll upset the donkey

ANSWER: Because he'll then have nothing to sleep on.

NOTES:
A 'Donkey's Breakfast' is the term for a saliors mattress in the merchant marine, so called because it consisted of a sack filled with straw. These were still in use into the 20th century. Only Merchant sailor had a Donkey's Breakfast as they slept in wooden bunks in the forecastle and deckhouse. Naval seamen slept in hammocks.

A fox's breakfast is said to be "a piss and a good look round." In Australia, this is sometime's called a drover's, or a dingo's, breakfast.
