On the 27th October 2000, 'Sergeant' Gander the Newfoundland dog was posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal (the "animals' VC") for actions on 19th December 1941 in defence of Hong Kong.

Gander was serving as a mascot to the Canadian Quebec Rifles. He had gone with them to Hong Kong and was there when the Japanese invaded on the 8th December.

During the defence, the story goes that Sergeant Gander (the men had promoted him) twice ran at the Japanese, barking at them and making them hesitate or divert their local advance. The third time, he picked up a thrown Japanese grenade and ran with it back to the Japanese lines. Sadly it exploded as he was carrying it (with somewhat inevitable consequences for Gander), but his taking it away had saved several Canadian wounded men.

It is a little difficult to believe that Gander knew what he was doing, and far more likely that he thought the Japanese were playing 'fetch'. However, his actions certainly saved lives and he provided a useful morale-building story for the Canadian troops subsequently taken prisoner.

At the request of the veterans of that battle, Gander's name was added to the Hong Kong Veteran's Memorial Wall in Ottawa.

That post doesn't mention Gander, though.

By simply adding a post link you implied that the topic had already been covered.

You hear that?

You implied, woman. Don't you know that an implication is the same as a direct personal attack on a person's integrity, usually involving much finger pointing and throwing of custard?

Well, it worked even better than I intended, then. ;-p
