The West Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed on November 1st 1918. It resulted from the break up of the patchwork of ethnically mixed peoples of the West Ukrainian/Galician Region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Threatened by a perceived "land grab" by Polish Nationalists the infant republic was born in haste under the leadership of the ultra-nationalist Kost Levytsky. Its capital was declared as Lemberg (Lviv in Ukrainian), a city known by its majority Polish population as Lvov. In the political instability following the end of World War I the Polish residents soon revolted against Ukrainian rule and the capital was moved to Ternopil. However independence was short lived and the new state joined the erstwhile Ukrainian People's Republic in January 22nd 1919.
