One of the World's poorest countries may benefit from the discovery of vast oil deposits in the Timor Sea. However, disputes with Australia and Indonesia (which controls West Timor) may cause problems.

Did you know that East Timor has entered a bid to host the Olympic Games every year since 1980 and was offered to host the Olympics in 1996 but forgot to build any stadiums so it went to the US.

Timor-Leste - as it prefers to be called in all languages - didn't become independent until 2002.

It may be that one of the independence movements which existed before then applied to host the Olympics as a statement / stunt, but no such application would have been considered since the National Olympic Committee wasn't founded until 2003.

In fact, the six cities which submitted final bids to host the 1996 Olympics were Athína, Atlanta (which won, and did host the games), Beograd, Manchester, Melbourne, and Toronto.

I wouldn't take the previous claim too seriously. Here are some other "facts" from the same site:

Quote:
Did you know, all of the Wu-Tang Clan have summer homes in East Timor and Raekwon’s home was named ‘Lovely Home of the Month’ in February by East Timor Homes and Gardens Magazine? Also, his song Ice Cream, is the East Timor national song?
Did you know, that although East Timor has no newspapers, its Fish and Chips are best in the world?
Did you know, that in East Timor, rattlesnakes are turned into makeshift baseball bats by our eager children, using the resin and the varnish left around by Manny Ramirez, when he spends time in the country on his fishing expeditions?
Did you know, Bruce Springsteen wrote an album called Born in East Timor entirely on the Qanbus Lute, but it was turned down by his label so he angrily recorded a stupid album called Nebraska on the guitar and blues harp instead?

How odd. The entries for other countries on that site don't appear to include a section full of deliberate bs, so what is special about Timor-Leste I don't know.

But since it's mentioned, Nebraska. The album on which Clarence and his saxophone and the rest of the E Street Band did not appear, and which Brooocie recorded in his kitchen on a 4-track.

It polarizes opinion immensely. I've met huge Springsteen fans who can't be doing with it; I've also met non-fans - fans of Johnny Cash and/or Bob Dylan, mostly - who consider it one of the greatest albums ever.

At the time the album was made no song called Night of the Johnstown Flood was known to exist, although at least three different ones have been written since.

OK, this has got to be true, though!

Sending snail-mail to Timor-Leste is a nightmare. It's advisable to mark your letters 'Dili via Darwin' otherwise they won't get anywhere. Especially if posting from Australia. Sometimes letters have even been sent to Delhi in error!
