The whole idea that China didn't have the technology for glass is categorically false, as there are many specimens of Chinese glass taking back to the last few centuries BC/BCE. I study glass trade in Asia during the first millennium, and the Chinese not only had glass technology, but invented their own manner of glass-making (using lead as a former instead of silica sands). Whether they used that technology in the centuries Fry mentions is a different story, but that doesn't mean that they didn't previously have the technology or that they hadn't invented glass before porcelain. The Chinese definitely "bothered to develop glass," and they did so long before many European groups had access to the material.

It's also not new information, this has been well-known by scientists for decades...
