Kingston-upon-Hull is a city which is often called Hull. The Hull is the river it stands upon (contrary to popular belief, it is not on the Humber, though in reality due to expansion it pretty much is) so calling it Hull is equivalent to calling London 'Thames' or Oxford 'Isis'. If anything it should be called Kingston for short, but this would presumably confuse people with the capital of Jamaica.
It was originally called Wyke-upon-Hull, but was renamed in 1293 when the King acquired it. It was heavily bombed in WWII. In 2008 it experienced an earthquake which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale.
Kingston upon Hull is the only UK city to have its own independent telephone company, resulting in the cream telephone boxes which can be seen. Due to this KOH was one of the first cities to get interactive TV.
Famous people to come from KOH include William Wilberforce, Amy Johnson, and (kind of) John Prescott, who adopted KOH as his home city despite being Welsh born.
In recent times KOH has become somewhat noted for having the worst exam results of any UK city.

Kingston upon Thames used to be the place where the kings of Wessex were crowned.

If you'd asked me, I'd have sworn that Kings of Wessex were crowned at Winchester - but the last couple were indeed crowned at Kingston upon Thames, as were the first few English kings. (If we date the existence of "England" from 927 and Ă■elstan. Not everyone does.)

Kingston, Ontario was called Cataraqui until 1787, when it was renamed for George III.

Oddly enough, it is not known precisely when or why Kingston, Jamaica acquired that name. It was earlier called Beeston (named after a former Governor of Jamaica, not after the suburb of Nottingham or even the suburb of Leeds).

Then there's "Kingston Upon Winterbourne" in Kent. Or that is what it should be called. Being a winterbourne it isn't there all year.

Maybe the same happened with Sandy Island somehow?

Sorry it's Naibourne, not Winterbourne. A nailbourne is the same as a Winterbourne.

My wife and I have also nicknamed BBC Yorks & Lincs as 'BBC Hull', since Auntie seems to think it is the region's 'centre of the universe'.

That's probably due to the huge gravitational field created by John Prescott.
