The ethnonym Celts (Latin: Celtae; Ancient Greek: Κελτοί Keltoi, later also Κέλται Keltai) seems to be based on a native Celtic tribal name (cf. Celtici in Portugal).

Now it seems that the word originally came to us from the French (Celtique).

This is why the football/basketball teams say their name with an s sound.

And the popular pronunciation (with a k sound) came about only after scholars decided to go back to the greek/roman that we ended up with the k sound.

And this transition happened from 1880 to 1950.

I blame it on the French.

I blame a lot on the French, mostly WW2.

Not to forget spawned out salmon.

The rules about not catching kelts seem counterintuitive, especially when it comes to conservation.
It's considered sporting to catch a salmon on its way to spawn but not after it has spawned.
