What is it about the Dagenham Girl Pipers?
They always used to get mentioned in 70s sitcoms.
Did they really exist? |

Yes, but I can't prove it. I remember seeing them perform on television back in 1953, when there was ONE channel, BBC, black & white, 405 lines, on two hours each weekday, four on Saturday, only gettable within 30 miles of London. I think there was a young feller called Bruce Forsyth presenting 'Saturday Night at the London Palladium', and one of the dancing girls was Betty Boothroyd (Madam Speaker), while another one was my landlady's daughter's sister-in-law. |

Once seen never forgotten.
No wonder they are so talked about. |

They're listed collectively as a member of the cast of Benny Hill's first film, 'Who Done It?' (tag line: 'Who cares?') (1956) on IMDb. |

I think it's the combination of words, and that they were female (as indicated by the girl bit). There were also mentioned in Round the Horne. |

Douglas Adams also mentioned them in 'The Salmon of Doubt';
DREAM LOVER:The Dagenham Girl Pipers. With all due respect and love to my dear wife, there are some things that, however loving or tender your wife may be, only a large pipe band can give you.
The girls are still performing at venues around the country though, sadly, not given rep in modern sit-coms, it seems! |

I can also prove their existence. They were guests in one of several TV programs recorded in England and on the continent by Frankie Laine in 1953. I have a copy of the show. |

I've seen a T-shirt reading "Dagenham Girl Pipers blow" - sadly, this didn't turn out to be a source of some exotic form of marijuana |
