Q: What would you do if you saw a Kitty being stabbed?
A: Probably nothing -- but it depends on how many other witnesses there were.
In 1964 in New York City, a woman named Kitty Genovese was returning home from work late at night when she was attacked by a stranger in front of an apartment complex and repeatedly stabbed. Her assailant left and returned to continue attacking her several times, and she died of her wounds. The story was picked up by the New York Times, which ran a major story about the fact that none of the people who had heard her cries had intervened. When interviewed, many had stated that they didn't want to get involved. Over the years, many of the assumptions about the incident have been called into question -- for example, some of the people in the apartments failed to call the police not out of callousness but because they were in the country illegally and feared deportation.

Nevertheless, the story has gone on to become frequently cited (at least in the States) in psychology textbooks as an example of the bystander effect -- the idea that people will not intervene to help someone in trouble if other witnesses are present because they can push off the responsibility onto the other person or people. The more other people are witnessing the event, the less likely it is that someone will intervene.

Another famous cause of the bystander effect is the Good Samaritan experiment. Seminary students were asked to go to a building to prepare a talk on the parable of the Good Samaritan. On the way to the building, a confederate of the study played a man passed out on the road. The study found that asking the students to think of the Good Samaritan had NO effect on the number of people who stopped to help the man!
