My 'copy and paste' functions won't work, which has seriously affected my forum posting activity; won't work either with keystrokes or context menu.
I am running Microsoft Windows 7 with IE9 on an HP/Compaq dual core desktop.
I have tried various remedies from Microsoft Forums, including Startup Repair from the installation disk, and nothing seems to work, although the function did return briefly after that, but went off again.
I have also scanned for malware with Microsoft Security Essentials and with IOBIT Malware Fighter v1.4; the latter did find a generic Trojan in a folder I did not recognise, which folder has now been permanently deleted.
I don't need to be told that I should not use Microsoft, and that I should install Linux and/or Chrome or whatever, and I need sensible advice in plain english.
Thank you.

Well, that's a few suggestions crossed off the list. Hmmm... sensible advice... tricky...

Can you outline the "various remedies" that you've tried so far.

The fact it started working and has now stopped is kinda interesting.

Can you try those "various remedies" again - and see if you can get it to briefly work again? And try and narrow down which remedy briefly worked?

This way we can spot what the problem is - and then try and figure out what is undoing the fix with something like procmon...

Personally I'd run system restore to get back to where you were before it started or stopped actually. There seems to be a few possible reasons for this but this one seems interesting as Java is constantly being updated it could be that.

I have applied the 'Java Console' fix, but it is too early to tell whether this has worked - if it has, I thank you in advance.
I did not realise how useful this function was, in many ways, until I lost it.

The clipboard isn't dependent on java.

Is it only the browser that's affected?

Mckeonj - does copy/paste not work with all ways of doing it - the edit menu option and the keyboard short-cut and the mouse short-cut?

It was the situation that the PASTE option did not work in all three modes.
Since applying the Java fix above, it does seem to be OK now, but time will tell. I will report on the morrow.

No, you were right, Java has nothing to do with the clipboard nor, contrary to the linked article, do any drivers. Still, if it worked, it worked. But there's no logical reason why it would have.

There seems to be a bit of a mystery associated with the java fix, while I agree there shouldn't be a link between java and the clipboard it seems that something may be kicking the clipboard out of commission, java appears to be the culprit in some cases.

After a bit of dodgy research:
It appears the the clipboard is a service (that is installed as part of your keyboard driver?).

C:\WINDOWS\system32\clipsrv.exe

Quote:
I uninstalled java. Don't know if I will be missing anything now but the paste does now work

So I guess Java possibly overrides this and tries to use its own clipboard...

Computers, who'd 'ave 'em...?

Update:
After applying the Java fix (nice secondary meaning there), the clipboard does seem to copy stuff, in that the wee blue up-arrow appears after highlight copy; however, the copied stuff cannot be pasted.
This may or may not be related; there is another problem which followed the re-install of Windows 7. At boot-up, a message "NTLDR is missing" appears, and boot-up stops, one must give the old three-fingered salute (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and then hold down Esc when the red screen appears, then select the boot disc from the blue menu.
I checked with Microsoft Help, and applied the "How to use the Bootrec.exe.tool.............." fix; to no effect.
Sigh.

Sounds like you need to do a start up repair.
